A Bain News Service glass negative from around 1912 shows Jeff Sweeney of the New York American League club, the team that would take the Yankees name the following year. The caption card reads "Yank - Sweeney," and the title and date rest on research by the Society for American Baseball Research's Pictorial History Committee in 2006, since the original record only bracketed the year. Bain's photographers worked in New York in the early 1900s, supplying newspapers with quick news pictures of athletes and events, so the image offers a sense of how the sport was documented before wire photos became routine. Its survival as a glass plate also makes it a useful record of the period's equipment and studio practices.
