Jeff Tesreau, a right-handed pitcher for the New York Giants, is the subject of this 1912 portrait, one of the many player pictures the Bain News Service produced for newspapers in that era. The Bain agency, run from New York by George Grantham Bain, shot and sold press photographs, and its glass negatives record the faces of the ballplayers and the game's rising celebrity culture before the wire services dominated sports coverage. Tesreau pitched for the Giants during their strong early-1910s teams, including the 1912 season that ended in a World Series defeat to Boston. The glass-plate format also preserves fine detail, such as the uniform and the photographer's studio lighting.
