This glass negative pairs two New York American League players, Harry Wolverton and Bob E. Williams, under a caption that calls the team the "Yanks." The club was still widely called the Highlanders in 1912, and the nickname "Yankees" was only beginning to catch on. The Bain News Service, a New York agency that sold photographs to newspapers, made the image, and it now sits in the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress. Those studio and wire-service portraits show how baseball players were presented to newspaper readers in the early 1910s, when the sport's celebrity depended heavily on printed images.
