Bob Williams is shown here in a New York Yankees uniform, the team's name on the caption cards Bain News Service used in 1913. That was the franchise's first season in New York after moving from Highlanders territory, and it was a rough one: the club finished near the bottom of the American League, and its players were often photographed as the city's new baseball team was still finding its footing. Bain's studio made thousands of glass negatives of athletes, politicians and street scenes, and portraits like this one give a direct sense of how early twentieth-century ballplayers were presented to the public.
