This Bain News Service glass negative shows Tillie Shafer, an infielder for the New York Giants, in uniform. The Giants were then managed by John McGraw and played at the Polo Grounds in upper Manhattan, so the portrait belongs to the city's busy baseball scene of the early 1910s. Bain's agency supplied news photographs to newspapers and magazines, and its glass plates capture how players were presented to a public that followed the game closely. The 1913 date comes from later research by the Society for American Baseball Research, so it is a considered attribution rather than a date written on the plate itself.
