Tillie Shafer is one of the few players in this collection shown in a New York Giants uniform rather than the crowded team groupings that fill most of the Bain baseball negatives. Tillie Shafer was a utility infielder for the Giants in the early 1910s, a period when the club, managed by John McGraw, was building a strong pennant contender in New York. The glass negative comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, the news photography archive of the Bain News Service, which sent pictures of athletes and city life to newspapers across the country. Its date of 1913 was assigned by later researchers at the Society for American Baseball Research rather than recorded on the original.
