Outfielder John J. "Red" Murray, of the New York National League club, is the subject of this glass negative, which the Bain News Service made in the early 1910s. Murray took his nickname from his red hair and spent much of the decade in the outfield for John McGraw's Giants, one of the strongest teams in the league at the time. The Bain collection, assembled by a New York news photo agency, preserved thousands of images of athletes, politicians and street scenes. The 1913 date is a research estimate by baseball historians, not a firm caption, so it is worth reading with that in mind.
