Fred Merkle, the New York Giants first baseman, is shown scoring on a home run, according to the Bain News Service caption dated October 10, 1913, which spells his name "Merkel." Merkle was best known for a baserunning mistake in a September 1908 game that cost the Giants a win, a reputation that followed him for the rest of his career. The Bain agency photographed many players and games in the 1910s, and this glass negative is one of its action shots. Researchers at the Society for American Baseball Research later confirmed the title and date.
