Two players nicknamed "Chief" appear together here: Chief Meyers of the New York Giants and Chief Bender of the Philadelphia Athletics, who were on opposing sides in the 1911 World Series. Meyers was Cahuilla from Southern California, and Bender was Ojibwe from Minnesota, and both were among the earliest Native American stars in major league baseball. The Bain News Service, a New York press photo agency, sold pictures like this to newspapers, which helps explain the plain sports caption. The Athletics won that Series four games to two.
