Christy Mathewson, the New York Giants pitcher known to fans as "Matty," appears here at batting practice before the 1911 World Series. That October the Giants met the Philadelphia Athletics, and the series drew heavy attention in New York. Mathewson was one of the era's most celebrated pitchers, and Bain News Service photographs like this one recorded the pregame routines that filled the ballparks.
