Camp Jackson, outside Columbia, South Carolina, was a United States Army training cantonment in 1918, when the country was in the First World War. The camp was built in 1917 and drew draftees and volunteers from across the Southeast, which brought thousands of young men and their families into a capital city that had been a quiet state seat and college town. Columbia's merchants, boardinghouses, and streetcar lines felt the rush of soldiers on leave, and the local economy leaned on the payrolls and supply contracts the camp provided. That autumn, influenza moved through military camps across the country, and the crowded barracks at Camp Jackson were not spared, a reminder of how closely the war's demands were tied to daily life at home.
