Camp Jackson sat on the outskirts of Columbia, South Carolina, in 1918, when the United States was deep in the First World War. The army had established the cantonment in 1917 as a training ground for draftees and volunteers, and it grew into one of the larger mobilization sites in the Southeast, drawing young men from across the region into barracks, drill fields, and rifle ranges. For a state whose economy rested heavily on cotton, textile mills, and farming, the camp brought new payrolls and a steady stream of soldiers into the capital's streets and shops. Columbia residents in 1918 knew the post as a place where their sons, brothers, and neighbors trained before shipping overseas, and the influenza epidemic that autumn would soon test the camp and the city alike.
