Camp Jackson sat on the outskirts of Columbia, South Carolina, in 1918, when the United States was deep into the First World War. The army established the camp in 1917 as a training cantonment, and it filled with draftees and volunteers who drilled in the sandy pine country north of the state capital. Columbia was a modest city then, known for its textile mills, its railroad connections, and the state government and University of South Carolina that anchored its civic life. In 1918 the camp's barracks, drill fields, and tent lines were a visible presence that changed the rhythm of the city, bringing soldiers into local streets and businesses. The influenza epidemic that autumn would soon strike the camp hard, as it did many military posts across the country.
