Long Beach, on the barrier island off Long Island's south shore, is the setting for this 1940 poster announcing an exhibition of oil paintings by well-known artists. The Federal Art Project, part of the Works Progress Administration, produced silkscreen posters like this one across the country in the late 1930s and early 1940s, using flat, bold color to promote concerts, classes, and exhibitions. Its catalog notes also name the sculptor Maurice Glickman, and a July 5, 1940 date stamp on the back suggests when the poster was printed or circulated.
