Taken on the Toledo, Peoria & Western line near Chatsworth, Illinois, this view shows the wreckage of locomotive No. 13 after the August 10, 1887, crash of the Niagara Excursion Train. The photograph was made from the south side looking northwest, and it marks the spot where Engineer McClintock was pulled from the cab. The excursion was bound for Niagara Falls, which gives the scene an unexpected link to this gallery's theme, and the wreck ranks among the deadliest American rail accidents of its era. Views like this one let readers far from Illinois see the damage for themselves.
