Around the early 1900s, Wellesley College in the town of Wellesley, Massachusetts, was a women's college about 15 miles west of Boston, set on the shore of Lake Waban. Founded in 1870 by Henry Durant and opened in 1875, it had grown into one of the leading colleges for women in the country, and its students were known for serious study of literature and languages. The town's rail connection to Boston made the campus easy to reach for visiting lecturers, families, and students traveling home. The college's strong English department and its devotion to the poetry of Robert Browning and Elizabeth Barrett Browning shaped its reputation, which is why a Browning portrait and a dedicated Browning Room on campus mattered so much to the community.
