Wellesley College, the women's college on the Charles River side of Wellesley, Massachusetts, was then a little over three decades old, having opened in 1875 on the former Hunnewell estate about twelve miles west of Boston. Its students came from across the country and were known for rigorous study in the sciences, languages, and the arts, and the campus was famous for its lakes, wooded grounds, and Gothic-inspired halls. The interiors shown here, with their reading rooms, dining hall, and classrooms, reflect the college's mission of giving women the same serious education then offered to men at Harvard and Yale. In 1914 fire destroyed College Hall, the original building, and the campus community rallied to rebuild it, a loss many alumnae remembered for years afterward.
