Wellesley College, in the town of Wellesley, west of Boston, was chartered in 1870 by Henry Fowle Durant and opened in 1875 as a women's college, one of the first in the country to offer a full four-year liberal arts course to women. The campus was laid out around Lake Waban, and its buildings were set on the rising ground above the water, a setting that students and visitors often praised. Wellesley's growth drew on the railroads that connected the town to Boston, which brought students, faculty, and visitors into a suburb that was otherwise quiet and residential. Magazine readers of the period knew the college for its emphasis on scholarship and for its women graduates, who entered teaching, science, and other professions that were then largely closed to women.
