Wellesley College, in the town of Wellesley west of Boston, was chartered in 1870 through the efforts of Henry Fowle Durant, a Boston lawyer who wanted a rigorous education for women, and it opened in 1875. The campus grew around the shore of Lake Waban in a community that was known as South Natick until its name was changed to Wellesley in 1881. The Boston and Albany Railroad linked the town to the city, which helped the suburb attract families and made the college a short trip from Boston. Its founders promoted laboratories, a library and a full four-year course of study. Readers of the period would have known the school as a bold experiment in higher education for women.
