Wellesley College, in the Boston suburb of Wellesley, Massachusetts, grew out of the Wellesley Female Seminary that Henry Durant founded in 1870 and that opened its doors in 1875. By the late nineteenth century the campus had become one of the best-known women's colleges in the country, and it was often grouped with Vassar, Smith, and Bryn Mawr among the so-called Seven Sisters. The college drew students from across the nation and depended on the Boston and Albany Railroad, whose Wellesley station brought visitors and students from the city. Its setting along Lake Waban, where students rowed, skated, and held outdoor events, was part of its appeal and a point of local pride. The view of the grounds reflects a campus that its community saw as both a serious academic institution and a carefully landscaped retreat.
