Wellesley College, in the town of Wellesley west of Boston, was a women's college around the turn of the twentieth century, and it drew students from across the country to its campus on the shore of Lake Waban. Founded in 1870 with a gift from Henry and Pauline Durant, the college had grown into a leading center for women's higher education, with a strong science program and a reputation for rigorous study. Houghton Memorial Chapel, completed in 1899, stood at the heart of campus life, hosting daily services, concerts, and gatherings that brought the student body together. Visitors arriving by the Boston and Albany rail line would have recognized the college as one of New England's most prominent institutions for women.
