Wellesley College, in the town of Wellesley about 12 miles west of Boston, was a women's college that Henry Fowle Durant founded and that opened in 1875, and by the turn of the twentieth century it had become one of the best-known women's colleges in the country. The campus sat along the Boston and Albany rail line, so students and visitors arrived by train from Boston and the surrounding towns. Student life centered on literary and social societies, which met in halls like the one shown here for debates, readings, and performances, and on the classes and chapel services that set the daily schedule. Many families in Massachusetts and beyond regarded the college as a serious place to earn a degree, and the buildings and corridors pictured here show the everyday routines of that community.
