Wellesley College, in the town of Wellesley about 12 miles west of Boston, was founded in 1870 by Henry Fowle Durant as a college for women and opened in 1875. Its grounds grew around Lake Waban, where students walked, rowed, and studied outdoors. The Boston and Albany rail line made the town a commuter suburb, drawing Boston families who valued the college's strong offerings in literature, science, and music. A magazine spread of its brick and stone halls would have shown readers an institution that was then regarded as one of the country's leading colleges for women.
