Wellesley College in Massachusetts was still a young women's school in the 1880s. It had been chartered in 1870 and opened in 1875 on an estate beside Lake Waban, in a town that was renamed Wellesley in 1881. Its founder, Henry Durant, wanted women to receive a education on a level with men's colleges, and the first students lived in one large building overlooking the lake. The Boston and Albany Railroad ran through the district, linking the campus to Boston a short ride east. A parlor scene like this one, printed in a student publication, shows the social life around the classroom, where young women read, sang, and received callers under the school's rules.
