Wellesley College, a women's college on the shore of Lake Waban in the town of Wellesley, about 12 miles west of Boston, drew its students and faculty from a suburb that the Boston and Albany Railroad had made easy to reach. Founded by Henry and Pauline Durant with the aim of giving women a rigorous education equal to men's colleges, the school built College Hall as its central building, and by the turn of the century its music program and conservatory were a point of pride. The photographs on this magazine page show the campus as a place of study, music, and ceremony, and readers at the time would have known it as one of the leading colleges for women in New England. The main building was destroyed by fire in 1914 and later rebuilt, a reminder of how fragile even the grandest campus buildings could be.
