Wellesley College, in the town of Wellesley about 12 miles west of Boston, was a women's college in the early 1900s, and its art collection was one of the points of pride on campus. The college was founded in 1870 with money from Henry Fowle Durant and opened in 1875, and by the turn of the century it had grown into a major institution drawing students from across the country. The Boston and Albany Railroad ran through the town, making the campus easy to reach from the city for students, visiting families, and lecturers. Students and faculty used galleries like this one to study plaster casts of classical sculpture and to look at paintings, work that was central to the college's teaching in art history. For the people of Wellesley, the college was the town's best-known institution and a source of civic pride.
