Seen from above, Havana's harbor and walled city spread out in a single sweep, offering armchair travelers a view of a Caribbean port most of them would never visit. The engraving appeared in *Gleason's Pictorial*, a Boston illustrated weekly that filled its pages with views of distant cities, and it dates to 1854, when Havana was a major Spanish colonial port and a center of sugar shipping. Bird's-eye views like this one let viewers take in a city's layout, fortifications, and waterfront in one image, details a ground-level sketch could not easily show. Look closely at the harbor entrance and the dense rooftops to see how the city crowded tightly against the water.
