This color lithograph looks west from the top of the Capitol while its new cast-iron dome was still under construction in the mid-1850s. Edward Sachse, a Baltimore draftsman and publisher, drew and issued the sheet under the label "Sachse's Litho-Chromatic Oil Pictures," a claim that his printed city views could rival painted canvases. From that height the view takes in the unfinished Washington Monument and the open ground of the National Mall, offering a record of a capital that had not yet grown into its plans.
