The obelisk rising from the west end of the National Mall is the Washington Monument, built to honor George Washington. Architect Robert Mills drew the original plan, and construction began in 1848, but money shortages and political disputes stopped work for years, and the shaft was not finished until 1884. Visitors can still see where the marble changes shade partway up, marking the break between the two building campaigns. When it was completed, it was the tallest structure in the world.
