Rising from the west end of the National Mall in Washington, D.C., this obelisk honors George Washington and remains the tallest stone structure in the world. Architect Robert Mills drew the original design, and construction began in 1848 but stalled for years when funding ran short. The monument was finally completed in 1884, dedicated in 1885, and opened to visitors in 1888. Look for the change in the marble about a third of the way up the shaft, where work paused and resumed with stone from a different quarry.
