Sculptor Gutzon Borglum's model of the Mount Rushmore carving shows the four presidents he chose for the granite face in South Dakota's Black Hills: Washington, Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Lincoln. Carving on the mountain began in 1927 under Borglum's direction and continued after his death in 1941, when his son Lincoln Borglum oversaw the final work. Photographed around 1936, the small-scale model guided the enlargement of the design onto the massive rock face, a process that relied on dynamite and drills as well as hand tools.
