The reflecting pool at the Lincoln Memorial is the detail that anchors this scene, with men walking its edge while the crowd has yet to gather. The memorial was dedicated in 1922 and the pool was laid out as part of the long axis that runs from the Capitol toward the Potomac, so the view down its length was meant to frame the seated statue of Lincoln at the far end. Images like this one, taken before the crowds arrive, show how the grounds looked when the setting was still quiet and the monument's formal design was easiest to see.
