Taken in July 1916, this view shows the Lincoln Memorial while its exterior was still under construction at the western end of the National Mall. Architect Henry Bacon's Greek Doric design was built of white marble, and the memorial was not dedicated until 1922, six years after this scene. The image comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington studio whose views document the capital in the early twentieth century, and it shows the site before the finished monument took its familiar form.
