The Lincoln Memorial stands at the west end of the National Mall in Washington, D.C., where it was built on reclaimed marshland along the Potomac. Architect Henry Bacon designed the white marble temple, and sculptor Daniel Chester French carved its nineteen-foot seated figure of Abraham Lincoln from Georgia marble. The memorial was dedicated in 1922, and its 36 Doric columns stand for the states in the Union when Lincoln died in 1865. Visitors often read the Gettysburg Address and the Second Inaugural Address carved on the interior walls.
