Memorial Bridge spans the Potomac between Arlington, Virginia, and the Lincoln Memorial, and this view is taken from the Virginia end, looking across the water toward the white marble temple at the Mall's western edge. The bridge was built in the 1920s to form a direct axis between Arlington National Cemetery and the monument, and its two classical end pylons give the approach a formal, processional feel. This color transparency dates from about 1944 to 1946, when the Office of War Information was documenting American life and landmarks, and it captures the capital in wartime, a period when the monuments were a steady symbol of national purpose.
