Taken on February 5, 1865, this carte de visite shows Abraham Lincoln about a month before his second inauguration, with the Civil War nearing its end. Alexander Gardner, who had earlier served as photographer to the Army of the Potomac, made the portrait, and the Washington firm Phillip & Solomons is credited on the mount. Cards like this were sold and traded in large numbers during the war, and this sitting became one of the most widely reproduced images of the president. The albumen print's soft tones and the small card format are typical of the portraits people collected at the time.
