The sitting that produced this head-and-shoulders portrait, made on November 8, 1863, took place in Alexander Gardner's Washington studio less than two weeks before Lincoln delivered the Gettysburg Address. Lincoln faces the camera squarely, with a calm, direct expression that contrasts with the grim news from the battlefields of the previous summer. Gardner, a former assistant to Mathew Brady, became one of the most important photographers of the Civil War, and his studio portraits of Lincoln were widely copied and distributed. Because the image was reproduced so often, it helped shape how the public pictured the president during the war.
