This oval, head-and-shoulders portrait shows Abraham Lincoln turned slightly to the right, in a small print about 6 by 5 inches. Alexander Hesler, a Chicago photographer, made it on June 3, 1860, a few weeks after the Republican National Convention in Chicago nominated Lincoln for president. Portraits from Hesler's studio that summer were widely copied and circulated during the campaign, helping shape how voters saw the candidate. The oval crop was a common format for cartes and small prints of the period.
