Facing right in a head-and-shoulders pose, this portrait shows Abraham Lincoln as he appeared in the years just before he rose to national prominence. Circa 1860 was the year he won the Republican nomination for president and then the election, and portraits from this period were widely copied and engraved, so images like this one reached readers far beyond the sitter's home state of Illinois. The profile orientation was a common choice in nineteenth-century portraiture and gives the face a clean, formal outline. Worth noticing is how such prints served as the public's main way of seeing a politician whom most Americans had never met in person.
