Lincoln is shown here in an oval vignette, a format popular in nineteenth-century portraiture, with the head and shoulders fading softly into the background. Oval framing was a standard studio choice that drew attention to the face and collar while leaving the rest of the image open. The board places it among extra Lincoln images alongside campaign buttons, a reminder that his likeness circulated widely in both formal portraits and inexpensive political souvenirs during his public career. Pictures like this one were often reproduced and sold, which helped shape the familiar image of the president that many Americans still carry today.
