Few images of Abraham Lincoln from around 1860 show him in quite this way: a head-and-shoulders view turned to the right, the profile that became one of the most reproduced faces in the country. By that year Lincoln was a lawyer and former congressman from Illinois, and his growing fame as a speaker, especially after the 1858 Senate debates with Stephen Douglas, had made demand for his likeness high. Printed portraits like this one were sold and circulated widely during the presidential campaign that autumn, when engravers and lithographers turned photographs into images for newspapers and campaign material. Worth noticing is how these prints gave voters a sense of a plain, serious man who would soon lead a divided nation.
