This carte de visite shows Abraham Lincoln, and its mount credits Alexander Gardner, whose Washington studio sold portraits of prominent figures during the war. The printed phrase "photographer to the Army of the Potomac" recalls Gardner's earlier field work with Union armies, a title he kept in use after he returned to his studio. The sitting dates to February 5, 1865, about a month before Lincoln's second inauguration and two months before Lee's surrender at Appomattox, so the portrait captures a president near the end of the war. The Phillip & Solomons imprint identifies the firm that distributed the card.
