Pictured here is the spot the title identifies as the former residence of President Lincoln and the birthplace of his son Robert, in Springfield, Illinois. The Globe Tavern, which the record places at or near this site, was a working inn, and the Lincolns rented rooms there after their marriage in 1842, before Robert was born in 1843. Chicago photographer Samuel Montague Fassett made the albumen print around 1865. The men in suits and top hats standing at the end of the row of buildings give a sense of the street as it looked in that period.
