This is a full stereo card, with two nearly identical exposures mounted side by side so that a stereoscope could fuse them into a single image with apparent depth. The portrait dates to about February 1865, when Lincoln was preparing for his second inauguration on March 4 and the Civil War was approaching its close. Stereo cards like this were sold in large numbers and were a common way for Americans to see public figures at home. Lincoln sat for many photographers during his presidency, and the surviving portraits from this period show a man visibly worn by the war.
