Lincoln sat for this portrait in the last months of his life, and the stereo card format tells us it was made for the popular market of the day. Stereo cards were viewed through a stereoscope, which fused two slightly offset images into a single three-dimensional scene, and they were sold in large numbers to households across the North. The albumen silver print carries the title "Hon. Abraham Lincoln, President of the United States," reflecting how his office was printed on images of him even as the Civil War neared its end in early 1865. Portraits like this one helped shape how the public pictured a president who was then guiding the country toward reunion.
