Lincoln appears here as "Hon." Abraham Lincoln, a title that signals how he was known before he became a national figure, when he was a lawyer and Illinois politician working his way toward the presidency. This lithograph, c. 1860, was drawn by Leopold Grozelier and printed by J.H. Bufford's firm in Boston, a shop that turned out many portraits of public men for the campaign-era market. Images like this circulated widely in the months before the 1860 election, and they helped introduce a largely unknown western candidate to voters in the eastern states.
