Its title places Abraham Lincoln on his return home after the successful 1860 presidential campaign, a subject a late-century printmaker could render with warm, sentimental detail. The picture was produced around 1898 by the Rees Print & Lithography Company of Omaha, a firm that made large colored lithographs for the popular market. Made nearly four decades after the events it depicts, it reflects how Lincoln's memory had grown into a national symbol following his assassination in 1865. Chromolithography built its color from several stones or plates, so the layering of tones is worth examining closely.
