Few places are more closely tied to Abraham Lincoln than his Springfield, Illinois, home, which he bought in 1844 and where he raised his sons. This Currier & Ives lithograph, published in New York around 1867, presents that domestic side of him just two years after his assassination, while the country was still mourning. Currier & Ives sold such prints cheaply in large numbers, and they were often hung in parlors, so images like this helped shape how ordinary Americans remembered Lincoln as a family man as well as a wartime president. Its popularity says as much about postwar grief as it does about the man himself.
