Few images of Lincoln's boyhood were made for the public, so this lithograph stands out for presenting his early years as a single, self-contained story: a young frontier boy whose humble start would later be read as the foundation of his character. The print appeared around 1865, the year Lincoln was assassinated, when demand for images of him surged and publishers offered affectionate, idealized views of his life. Lincoln was born in Kentucky in 1809 and spent his youth in Indiana and then Illinois, and printmakers drew on that rural background to build the "log cabin" legend that shaped how Americans remembered him. J. Mayer & Co. of Boston issued it, and the piece is a useful example of how commercial lithography turned a president's youth into a moral lesson.
