Lincoln's likeness here was drawn from a portrait made from life by Charles A. Barry in Springfield, Illinois, in June 1860, a few months before his election as president. The lithograph was printed by J.H. Bufford's firm in Boston and issued by Thayer & Eldridge, a publishing house that circulated campaign-era images of the candidate. Prints like this one spread Lincoln's face to voters who had never seen him in person, at a time when photographs were still difficult to reproduce in newspapers and books.
